Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras took some Iowa fans by surprise Tuesday night. A video showed Petras launching a pass with ease for roughly 70 or 75 yards while he was at the Manning Passing Academy. "My goodness," one fan tweeted as it circulated around social media. By Thursday evening, it had almost 72,000 views on Twitter. But the person who recorded the video wasn't surprised. "The biggest thing that people don't realize, I think, in Iowa is how well he throws the football and how strong his arm is," said Tony Racioppi, who was on the staff at the Manning camp.

Racioppi also has been Petras' private quarterback coach, working with him on many of the tweaks that could make a big difference for the Hawkeyes' offense. Not unlike other Power Five quarterbacks, there were some adjustments needed to his mechanics when Petras visited Racioppi shortly after the 2021 season. Offseason priorities in 2022 have included "cleaning up his throwing sequence," adjusting his footwork, staying balanced and maneuvering around the pocket. "When my fundamentals are correct, I don't miss," Petras said in the spring. - The Gazette

Throughout the spring, as Simeon Harris was finishing high school, he kept hearing how well Colorado's young cornerbacks were playing in practice. As a young corner set to join the Buffaloes this summer, Harris got excited. "It was good seeing them and watching them compete and all of that," Harris said prior to leaving for Boulder on Saturday. "It should be a good group of guys when we're all in there in the room. It's gonna be a lot of competition. Yes (we're young) and we're all scrappy. We all love to compete. It's gonna be fun." Harris will be one of four true freshmen corners for the Buffs this season, along with Keyshon Mills, Jason Oliver and Joshua Wiggins. Oliver and Wiggins got to CU in January and went through practices.

The cornerback room also includes true sophomores Kaylin Moore and Nikko Reed, third-year sophomore Toren Pittman and junior Nigel Bethel Jr. "It's gonna be a lot of great competition," Harris said. "I'm not shying away from any anything, so I'm ready for all of that." A 6-foot, 180-pound corner from Benicia High School in Vallejo, Calif., Harris is one of 19 newcomers set to join the Buffs, who begin summer workouts this week. "I'm excited about it," he said. "I'm not really nervous. I'm just really pumped up to get out there and get ready to play. I've been waiting to get back on the field for a long time now. So being in that environment should be great." - Daily Camera

UCF redshirt freshman linebacker Cole Joyce has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal, he announced on social media Tuesday. Joyce appeared in only one game while working primarily with the scout team last season. He will have at least four years of eligibility remaining at his next school. "Thank you to the UCF coaching staff for their guidance, support and mentorship," Joyce wrote on Twitter. "I have had an amazing experience. Thank you Knight Nation!" Joyce is the second member of UCF football to jump in the portal, joining reserve quarterback Parker Navarro, who announced his decision Monday. A member of UCF's 2021 recruiting class, Joyce played linebacker at Bentonville High School in Arkansas.   Levi Williams ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 127 yards and another touchdown to lead Wyoming to a 52-38 win over Kent State on Tuesday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Williams, who set a career-best single-game rushing performance, tied the Potato Bowl record for most rushing touchdowns and was named the game's MVP. "He's very gifted and can run like the wind," Wyoming coach Craig Bohl said. "And obviously, it's great to see him make those plays he's very capable of making." Kent State (7-7), playing in its fifth bowl game in school history, raced out to a 17-7 lead and held a 24-21 advantage at halftime, but the Golden Flashes couldn't hold up against Wyoming's relentless rushing attack. "That's not the outcome we were looking for," Kent State coach Sean Lewis said. "Areas that hampered us all year long hurt us today...But I'm eager and excited to get back to work and build a program that Kent State can be proud of." Wyoming (7-6) scored 21 consecutive points to start the second half, including scoring runs of 27 and 80 yards by Williams, to build a 42-24 lead that proved to be too much for Kent State to overcome. Wyoming senior linebacker Chad Muma and Butkus Award finalist didn't disappoint in his final college game, leading the Cowboys on defense with 13 tackles and a half sack. - Wyoming/AP College Football

Although it is not as common as it used to be, college football fans are still typically greeted with at least one surprise on national signing day, and Utah State was no exception on Day 1 of the early signing period. The Aggies signed three transfers Wednesday morning who had not previously disclosed their intentions on social media. Former Miami safety Gurvan Hall inked his letter of intent with the Aggies, as did Washington linebacker MJ Tafisi and Arkansas State defensive back Anthony Switzer, who was brought in to compete at the striker position. The Aggies have greatly benefited from the transfer portal on their way to a Mountain West championship this season as Quazzel White (right tackle), Logan Bonner (quarterback), Calvin Tyler Jr. (running back), Brandon Bowling (wide receiver), Byron Vaughns (defensive end), Patrick Joyner Jr. (DE), Justin Rice (linebacker), Hunter Reynolds (safety) and Monte McGary (safety) have all played a big part in the team's success. All of those athletes were part of Blake Anderson's first recruiting class at the Aggie helm. - Herald Journal Tribune
